- <p> HONORED. JOHNNY CARSON, 67, television talk-show host; as one
- of five recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors for contributions
- to American culture. Carson was cited along with Arthur Mitchell,
- founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem; conductor Georg Solti;
- gospel singer Marion Williams; and Broadway-musical maestro
- Stephen Sondheim. While perhaps an obvious choice to most Americans,
- Carson is something of a breakthrough for the Kennedy Honors,
- which have seldom gone to artists who pursued a career exclusively
- in television--Lucille Ball being perhaps the most conspicuous
- exception.
