  16. of five recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors for contributions
  17. to American culture. Carson was cited along with Arthur Mitchell,
  18. founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem; conductor Georg Solti;
  19. gospel singer Marion Williams; and Broadway-musical maestro
  20. Stephen Sondheim. While perhaps an obvious choice to most Americans,
  21. Carson is something of a breakthrough for the Kennedy Honors,
  22. which have seldom gone to artists who pursued a career exclusively
  23. in television--Lucille Ball being perhaps the most conspicuous
  24. exception.
